Sports and Entertainment

Rangpur Division boasts a rich and unique heritage in sports and recreation. Traditional and regional games have long been integral to the local culture. Among the most prominent are Ha-du-du (Kabaddi, the national sport of Bangladesh), standing tag (Dariabandha), kite flying of various colors, Pakhi, Gollachhut, Ekkadokka, Bou-chhut, and Danda-Guli—known locally in the Rangpur dialect as Chengu-Penti. Traditional martial and folk games like Lathikhela (stick fighting), swordplay, and Dadhi-Kando are also noteworthy. These games are not only popular across Rangpur but also enjoy popularity in rural areas of some Indian districts, highlighting their cross-border cultural significance.

When speaking of Rangpur’s sporting legacy, football stands out as a pioneering discipline. The game was introduced in the early 19th century under the patronage of the Raja Bahadur of Tajhat. Since then, Rangpur has produced numerous renowned footballers. Notable among them are the legendary Abdul Samad (widely known as "The Magician"), Mona Guha, Gopal Roy, Kamakhya Das, Islam, Suren Dey, Jiban Mukherjee, Santu, Kazi Sattar, Kazi Anwar, and Munna, among others, whose contributions have left an enduring mark on the region's football history.
